With miles of Gallatin National Forest trails, Yellowstone National Park trails and an internationally known Nordic center, Big Sky offers countless cross-country ski opportunities. Nordic enthusiasts can focus on groomed trails or head out into the easily accessed backcountry. For more than 35 years, Lone Mountain Ranch (LMR) has been a favorite destination for North American Nordic skiers. The guest ranch offers 85km of superbly groomed classic and freestyle trails. Equipment rentals are available, and ski lessons can be arranged at the Nordic Shop. Both those staying in cozy log cabins and day skiers can enjoy meals in the Dining Lodge.

LMR will arrange guided ski and snowshoe tours in the backcountry of the Yellowstone Ecosystem and into Yellowstone Park’s thermal basins. Local outdoor shops offer backcountry ski rentals and maps for self-guided ski tours of Gallatin National Forest and Yellowstone National Park trails. A second groomed Nordic area, the Rendezvous Ski Trails at the edge of the town of West Yellowstone, gives Big Sky visitors 35-50 km of trails in the Gallatin National forest, groomed nearly every day from early November through late March and often into April.
