If you’re looking to do something extraordinary while you’re in Big Sky, Montana put the Lone Peak Expedition at the top of your list. There are plenty of mountains to climb in Big Sky, but perhaps the best way to get a bird’s eye view of Big Sky is by booking a trip on the Lone Peak Expedition.
The Lone Peak Expedition is a 2.5 hour adventure to the top of Lone Mountain at 11,166′. The panoramic views from Montana’s highest scenic overlook will blow your mind. And the great thing about the Lone Peak Expedition is that you don’t even need to hike to the top.
Once you get to Big Sky Resort’s Mountain Village, sign up for your guided trip to the top of the tram. The Lone Peak Expedition operates during the summer season – weather permitting. There are multiple trips per day and each trip has a maximum of 11 people. So you may want to book in advance!

Start your adventure at the Swift Current high-speed quad chairlift. It will take you from the mountain’s base at 7,500′. Watch for elk, moose, or even bears on the way up. At the top of the chairlift, you’ll board an open-air Safari Truck and be driven to the base of the Lone Peak Tram.

The Lone Peak Tram is a 15-passenger tram with two cabins alternating directions. The Tram travels 1,450′ vertical feet over 2,828′ of distance and delivers you to the top of Lone Mountain. Keep your eyes out for mountain goats that live on the rocky cliffs near the mountain’s peak during the ride.

Lone Mountain is one of the highest peaks in the entire Madison Range. At the top, you’ll be greeted with some of the most spectacular views in all of Big Sky. The entire Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem spreads out below you. It feels like you can see forever!
Your knowledgeable and experienced guide will point out the peaks, valleys, mountain ranges, three states (Montana, Wyoming, and Idaho), and two national parks (Yellowstone National Park and the Grand Teton National Park) that are visible from the top.

See if you can spot Cedar Mountain, Fan Mountain, Beehive Peak, the Sphinx and other prominent mountains.
