Here’s how to head out smart:

Know Your Limits

Play it safe. If you’re unsure about the trail, the conditions, or your gear, turn back. There’s no shame in knowing when to call it.

Plan Ahead

  • Map it out. Know your route and download maps or permits ahead of time.
  • Watch the weather. Big Sky can go from sunny to sideways quickly. Pack layers, pack extras.
  • Gear up. Water, snacks, proper footwear, sunscreen, bear spray, you’ll need all of it.
  • Pack personal meds, inhalers, EpiPens, anything you rely on, bring it, and let someone in your group know how to use it if needed.

Tell Someone
Let a friend know where you’re going and when you’ll be back. It’s also a good idea to leave a note on your dashboard with your planned hike and expected return time — so if someone comes across your vehicle, they’ll know what to expect. If something happens, these steps could save your life.

Save Emergency Numbers
If you’re in Big Sky Resort, save the ski/bike patrol numbers to your phone before you head out.

Hire a guide

Visiting the area? Local guides and outfitters know the terrain, the weather, and the wildlife. When in doubt, go with a guide --They love what they do, and it makes your experience safer, richer, and way more fun.
