Spring Break in Big Sky is a masterclass in variety. Longer days, warmer sunshine, and a lively mountain buzz make mid-March an especially fun time to visit. It’s the kind of place where you can feel the season shifting—in the best way.

If you’re heading to Big Sky this March, here are the three absolute must-do experiences for your itinerary.

Colorful bowling balls arranged on wooden shelves against a rustic brick wall, creating a vibrant and inviting atmosphere for leisure activities.

Spring Skiing at Big Sky Resort

March is arguably the best month to ski at Big Sky Resort. You get the perfect mix of deep winter base and the legendary "corn snow" that defines spring riding in Montana. The vibe at the base area shifts to "deck season," where long lunches in the sun at Everett’s 8800 or Carabiner are mandatory.

With frequent bluebird days, it's the perfect opportunity to also check out the brand-new Kircliff glass observation deck to see 360-degree views. No skiing or snowboarding required.

Hike to Ousel Falls

If you need a break from the lifts, the hike to Ousel Falls is a local favorite. This 1.6-mile round-trip trail is well-maintained and stunning year-round, but March offers a unique "frozen in time" look. You’ll see the 35-foot waterfall beginning to roar behind massive towers of winter ice.

The trail is great for all ages, but spring in Montana can be a mix of snow, ice, and mud. Wear boots with good traction or bring a pair of traction devices (like Yaktrax). The trail stays shaded in the ravine, so those icy patches can linger well into the afternoon.

Bowling at Beartooth Pub & Rec (The Montage)

When the sun goes down or if you just need a break from the elements, head to Beartooth Pub & Rec inside the Montage Big Sky. It’s home to the only bowling alley in town.

Beyond the bowling lanes, the pub features arcade games, darts, and a menu of "elevated comfort food"—think wood-fired pizzas and decadent huckleberry milkshakes. It’s a perfect spot for families or groups to unwind and engage in some friendly competition after a day of outdoor adventure.

Pro Tip: Lanes are available on a first-come, first-served basis. During the busy March Spring Break weeks, it’s a good idea to arrive early in the evening to put your name down.

Why March Hits Different:

  • The "Corn" Window: The freeze-thaw cycle creates soft, forgiving snow that’s perfect for intermediate skiers looking to level up.

  • Sun Protection: Don't be fooled by the crisp air—the high-altitude sun reflecting off the snow is no joke. Pack the sunscreen!

  • Longer Days: More daylight means you can ski until the lifts close and still have plenty of time for a hike or a bowling session before dinner.

Whether you're carving through morning corn snow, discovering the frozen magic of Ousel Falls, or chasing a strike at the Montage, Big Sky in March is all about making the most of every hour of daylight. This is the time of year when the mountain culture truly shines—long sun-drenched days, crisp alpine air, and endless ways to play in our backyard.
