Summer hike in Beehive

Whether you are chasing the adrenaline of a high-alpine summit or seeking the rhythmic peace of a forest stroll, Big Sky’s trail system offers a path for every pace. Our backyard is a mosaic of diverse terrain, stretching from the shaded banks of the Gallatin River to the rugged peaks of the Spanish Peaks. Below, we’ve curated five essential local hikes that showcase the very best of our wild landscape—each offering a unique way to immerse yourself in the Montana summer.

The Awe-Inspiring Beehive Basin Hike

If you’re looking for a hike that feels truly aspirational, this is the one. The Beehive Basin trail takes you through a landscape of wildflowers and towering peaks, culminating in a breathtaking view of an alpine lake. It’s an adventure that feels both challenging and incredibly rewarding—the kind of experience that reminds you of the understated luxury of having a pristine wilderness right in our backyard.

Peak Views & High Energy: The Climb to Lava Lake

If you are looking for a classic mountain workout with a postcard-perfect payoff, Lava Lake is your hike. Let’s be real: you won’t have this popular trail to yourself, and the steady, six-mile round-trip climb up the Cascade Creek canyon will definitely get your heart pumping.

But every ounce of effort is rewarded. The well-traveled trail keeps you company with the sound of rushing water before opening up to a stunning, high-alpine basin. At the top, find a granite boulder to sit back and watch wild rainbow trout ripple the water, or join the brave locals taking a quick, bracing plunge into the crystal-clear lake. It’s a quintessential southwest Montana experience—just be sure to hit the trailhead early to beat the parking rush!

A Local Classic: The Ousel Falls Trail

For a dose of wild that's close to home, Ousel Falls is a must-see. This popular and easy-to-access trail is a local favorite for good reason. The path meanders through a lush forest alongside the South Fork of the West Fork of the Gallatin River, leading you to a powerful, 100-foot waterfall. It's the perfect quick escape for families and friends who want a big payoff with minimal effort. A must-do for anyone visiting Big Sky.

The Town Center Quick-Escape: Uplands Trail

Not every top hike needs to take half a day. To balance out the longer treks, Uplands offers massive, wide-angle mountain views with a fraction of the time commitment. It’s the perfect option for a morning warm-up, a quick trail run, or a spontaneous sunset stroll right after dinner. Starting just minutes from Big Sky’s Town Center, this beautifully maintained loop winds its way uphill through open, sun-drenched meadows that burst with yellow balsamroot and wildflowers in early summer. Because it isn’t buried deep in a tight canyon, it provides an immediate, birds-eye perspective of the town, Lone Mountain, and the surrounding ranges. It’s highly accessible, incredibly convenient, and lets visitors capture that classic Big Sky feeling without committing to a backcountry expedition.

On Top of the World: Moose Tracks Trail

Summer at Big Sky Resort isn't just for thrill-seekers; it’s a whole new way to experience the mountain. Starting right from the Mountain Village, the Moose Tracks trail takes you on a steady, winding journey under the canopy of pine forests and across open ski runs, following a rushing stream partway up the mountain.

The real magic of this hike is its flexibility. You can choose to push your lungs and hike the full three miles uphill to the top of the Swift Current 6 chairlift, or you can buy a scenic lift ticket, ride to the top in style, and enjoy a leisurely, gravity-assisted hike back down to the village. Either way, you are treated to sprawling, panoramic views of the Spanish Peaks and the Gallatin Range that make you feel like you are standing on the roof of Montana. With the added bonus of a cold drink and a patio lunch waiting for you right at the finish line.
