What To Expect In March

Snow Conditions & Weather

Historically, March is one of the snowiest months at Big Sky Resort, with average snowfall throughout the month. The resort's elevation—ranging from 7,500 feet at the base to 11,166 feet at Lone Peak—combined with its northerly latitude, creates ideal spring skiing conditions. While temperatures warm up as spring approaches, the mountain's north-facing terrain holds powder well into spring, while south-facing areas like Liberty Bowl offer perfect corn snow on sunny days.

Big Sky Resort averages 400 inches of annual snowfall, and conditions remain excellent throughout March with deep base depths. The resort's varied terrain across multiple microclimates means you can find great snow no matter the weather.

Spring Break Crowds

March brings peak spring-break visitation to Big Sky, particularly mid-month, when many schools are on break. However, Big Sky's 5,850 acres of terrain means even on the busiest days, the expansive mountain provides far more space per skier than most major resorts. The modern lift system, with numerous heated and bubble chairs, makes even colder March days comfortable.

Planning tip: Book lodging and dining reservations well in advance for spring break weeks. Consider visiting late March to avoid peak crowds while still enjoying excellent conditions.

March offers some of the best skiing of the entire season. The deeper snowpack, varied conditions from powder to corn snow, and longer days create an ideal environment for exploring Big Sky's legendary terrain. Beyond skiing and snowboarding, Big Sky offers incredible options for non-skiers and those seeking variety:

Explore Kircliff

Kircliff is a two-story glass observation deck that sits atop the peak of Lone Mountain. With the addition of the new Explorer Gondola, all guests, whether they ski or not, can take the scenic journey all the way to the Peak. With incredible 360-degree views, Kircliff should be on every visitor's must-do list.

Dining and Après Scene

March's warming temperatures make outdoor après-ski especially enjoyable. Each weekend, don't miss the après-ski at Everett's 8800 and at Lone Mountain Ranch.

From casual grab-and-go to refined mountain cuisine, Big Sky's dining scene has something for every appetite. March is perfect for enjoying deck dining with mountain views as temperatures become more comfortable.

Take advantage of winter adventures before the season ends. Keep in mind that many of these activities are weather-dependent.
