Find Your Perfect Home Base in Big Sky
Planning a trip to Big Sky? One of the first decisions to make is where to stay. Big Sky may be a small town, but it’s full of character — and each area offers something unique. From the slopeside excitement of being on the Mountain to the walkable charm of Town Center and the Big Sky meadow, and the wild beauty of the Canyon, there’s a perfect spot for every traveler.
Here’s how to choose the right area for your stay in Big Sky.

The Mountain: For the Ski-First Travler
Vibe: Lively, scenic, and right at the base of Big Sky Resort.
Perfect for: Skiers, snowboarders, and mountain adventurers.
If your idea of a perfect vacation means waking up to fresh powder and stepping right onto the lift, staying on the mountain is where you want to be. The mountain area includes Big Sky Resort, Montage, Moonlight Basin, and the One&Only Resort— bustling in winter with après-ski spots, slope-side dining, and breathtaking views.
In the summer, trails replace ski runs, offering easy access to hiking, biking, and sightseeing, an adventurer’s dream, no matter the season.
Keep in mind: The mountain area is quieter in our shoulder seasons, with fewer amenities available. You'll also be at a higher elevation, so pack for mountain weather year-round and stay hydrated!
Meadow Village & Town Center: For the Social Explorer
Vibe: Walkable, community-oriented, and great for all seasons.
Perfect for: Families, foodies, and those who want easy access to everything Big Sky offers.
Just seven miles from the lifts, the Meadow and Town Center areas are Big Sky’s social hub. Here, you’ll find cozy coffee shops, local boutiques, and restaurants serving everything from tacos to fine dining.
In summer, the golf course and nearby trails make it easy to enjoy the outdoors without even getting in your car. In winter, you’ll find festive events, local markets, and plenty of après and live music options after a day on the mountain.
Keep in mind: You’ll need to drive to the ski lifts, but you’ll be in the middle of local life and community events.
Canyon Area: For the Wild at Heart
Vibe: Peaceful, natural, and close to the Gallatin River.
Perfect for: Anglers, hikers, and anyone looking for a quiet escape.
Nestled along the Gallatin River, the Canyon area offers a true Montana experience. It’s ideal if you’re craving solitude and scenic beauty, with easy access to fishing, rafting, and outdoor adventure.
Cabin-style lodging, historic dude ranches, starlit skies, and the sound of the river create a retreat-like atmosphere you won’t forget.
Keep in mind: Transportation is essential in this area. Renting a car or arranging shuttle service will make it easier to reach nearby attractions, restaurants, and Big Sky Resort.
