Montana Fishing Licenses:

Montana Fish, Wildlife, & Parks issues all Montana Fishing Licenses, which are required for all types of fishing on state waters. In the state of Montana, you actually need two licenses:

  1. Conservation License – This is required before you purchase a fishing or hunting license. A social security number and valid photo idea is required.
  2. Fishing License – A fishing license is valid from March 1 until the end of February the following year. It is nontransferable and nonrefundable. It allows the owner to fish and possess fish while following the state’s fishing regulations.

These licenses are available for purchase at FWP offices, FWP License Providers, or Online. The cost of the Conservation License is $8 for residents and $10 for non-residents. The cost for Montana fishing licenses are:

  • Ages 0-11 – No license required
  • Residents Ages 12-17 and 62 and Older – $10.50 per season
  • Residents Ages 18-61 – $21 for season
  • Non-residents Ages 12 and older: 2-Day License: $25, 7-Day License: $56, Season License: $86

Yellowstone National Park Fishing Permits:

No state licenses are required to fish within the boundaries of Yellowstone National Park, but a Yellowstone National Park fishing permit is required. They can be purchased at Park Visitor Centers or at Fly Shops near the park.

Children under 15 do not require a permit if they are fishing with an adult who has a permit. Children under 15 may obtain a free permit that is signed by an adult and may then fish without supervision.
