Originating in Scandinavia, skijoring began with reindeer and skis as a traditional means of winter travel. This unique culture crossed the Atlantic and gained significant momentum in the Western United States—specifically in places like Steamboat Springs—around the close of World War II. It was here that the reindeer were traded for the power of the American Quarter Horse, and a high-speed Western tradition was born.

Fast forward to today, and the pulse of skijoring beats throughout the Rocky Mountains. From Driggs, Idaho, and Pagosa Springs, Colorado, to our neighbors in Red Lodge, Montana, towns across the West have embraced this adrenaline-fueled heritage. We couldn’t be more pleased to bring this historic and cultural event to the heart of our beautiful mountain town.

The Big Sky Skijoring Association

The Big Sky Skijoring was born in 2018 as a collaborative effort to bring elite competition to our mountain town. Big Sky Skijoring Association’s mission is to harness a piece of the cultural history and charm of a true Western event and offer it to the residents and visitors of Big Sky, Montana. All proceeds go towards event costs and to benefit the Big Sky Ski Education Foundation.
