Welcome to the quiet beauty of September in Big Sky, where the air gets that first crisp hug of autumn and the mountain peaks often get a dusting of their first snow. As the summer hustle winds down, September becomes a sweet spot for those who want to experience the best of Big Sky with a bit of a peaceful, slower pace.
This is a prime time to enjoy a bit of rest while still having access to all the mountain adventures that make this place so special. With fewer crowds and cooler temperatures, it’s a great time to get outside. Here are our favorite ways to soak it all in.
Hit the trails
With the summer crowds gone, it's a perfect time to explore some of Big Sky's most popular hiking trails. The cooler temps make longer hikes more enjoyable, and you'll often have the trail all to yourself. As you head out, remember you're a guest in our wild spaces. Pack plenty of layers and water, and always carry bear spray. Animals start preparing for the winter season.
Mountain Biking
The downhill trails at Big Sky Resort are typically open well into mid-September, offering a final chance to get your adrenaline pumping. Once the resort closes for the season, there are still plenty of cross-country options in the area to keep you rolling on two wheels.
Fly-Fishing
With fewer people on the river, fly fishing in September is the epitome of serenity. Just you and the sound of the water, a serene and secluded experience that feels like a classic Montana moment.
Side-by-Side Adventures
Get in the backcountry with some side-by-side action. Local outfitters offer rentals and self-guided tours that take you deep into the rugged trail on Buck's Ridge. Experience the thrill of the ride along with jaw-dropping views of Lone Mountain, Sphinx Mountain, the Spanish Peaks, and more. Be sure to check with outfitters for September availability, as the season often runs through mid-October, weather permitting.
Trail Rides
As the colors of the leaves begin to change, September is a great time to experience the gorgeous landscapes from a different perspective—via horseback. Many local outfitters are still offering trail rides, allowing you to connect with the land in a truly intimate way.
Golf
The Big Sky public golf course is still open in September, offering a stunning par-72 course with some of the most scenic views you'll find anywhere. A perfect blend of sport and mountain scenery.
The Farmers Market
September marks the final month of the Big Sky Farmers Market. This is the heartbeat of our community, a place where you can stroll, chat with local farmers and artisans, and find incredible gifts. Just keep in mind that the September markets are a little smaller and will be located in the Fire Pit Park area only.
Live Music
While the Music in the Mountains concert series usually wraps up by the first week of September, you can still find live music throughout town at local venues. Explore the Big Sky music page for up-to-date information on who’s playing.
Special Events
September also brings some exciting events to our community. Cheer on the amazing athletes at The Rut Mountain Race at Big Sky Resort, raise a stein with friends at the fun Big Sky Oktoberfest in Town Center, or catch some incredible adventure films at the annual Lone Peak Film Festival.
With a variety of things to see and do, the fun definitely doesn't stop in September. Besides local activities, it's also a beautiful time of year to take a drive and visit Yellowstone National Park. With fewer crowds and the cooler weather making wildlife viewing a little easier, it's a favorite time of year to visit. With all its beauty and adventure, September is truly a special time to escape to Big Sky.
