BE PREPARED
Welcome to Montana! Here, cell reception is spotty, the weather shifts quickly, and wildlife is truly WILD! Your safety is your responsibility. Being prepared, informed, and cautious is crucial for your safety. It also helps save our resources and eases the load on our local search and rescue teams. Heading out on an adventure in Big Sky means taking responsibility for your safety and your group's. Here are some important details to keep in mind before beginning your adventure.
Know Your Limits:
Always play it safe. If you are unsure if you have the stamina or the right gear to continue, return to the trailhead.
Plan Ahead:
- Know where you're heading. Download all correct maps, directions, and any required permits.
- Check the weather in advance. Pack layers to adjust to changing weather patterns.
- Pack appropriately. Ensure you have the necessary gear for your adventure, including water, bear spray, sunscreen, proper footwear, etc.
- If you take specific medications or need items such as inhalers or epi-pens, carry them with you. And make sure those in your group are aware of and know how to use them.
Tell someone:
Let a trusted person know where you will be headed for the day and when they can expect you back. It’s also a good idea to leave a note on your dashboard with your planned hike and expected return time—so if someone comes across your vehicle, they’ll know what to expect.
Keep Emergency numbers in your Phone:
If you're at Big Sky Resort, we strongly suggest putting the Ski and Bike patrol numbers in your phone in case of an emergency on the trail.
Hire A Guide:
Local guides are a trusted resource, especially when you explore a new area. If you lack the knowledge or expertise, hire a guide or go with an outfitter to ensure the safest route possible.
