LEAVE NO TRACE
Keep Big Sky wild, for everyone who comes next. Big Sky’s wilderness is more than a backdrop, it’s the reason we’re all here. Practicing the seven Leave No Trace principles helps protect these wild places, reduce our impact, and make sure future generations can experience the same magic you do. Whether you’re hiking, camping, biking, or just soaking it all in, here’s how to leave it better than you found it.
Plan Ahead & Prepare:
Do your homework. Know where you’re going, what the weather’s doing, and what gear you’ll need. A little planning helps avoid accidents, overcrowded spots, and unnecessary damage to the landscape. Learn how to plan like a pro: here.
Travel and Camp on Durable Surfaces:
Stick to trails, rock, gravel, and established campsites. Don’t cut switchbacks or wander off-trail—those shortcuts can scar the land for years and destroy fragile plants.
Dispose of Waste Properly:
If you packed it in, pack it out. Leave nothing. That includes snack wrappers, banana peels, food scraps, and especially pet waste. Even biodegradable items take time to break down and can attract wildlife where they shouldn’t be.
Leave What You Find:
Rocks, flowers, and artifacts belong where nature put them. Take a photo, not a souvenir. And please don’t stack rocks or alter the landscape—nature’s already done the design work.
Minimize Campfire Impacts:
Use existing fire rings, keep flames small, and always drown, stir, and feel before leaving your fire. If it’s windy or the fire danger is high, skip the fire altogether.
Respect Wildlife:
Give animals plenty of space and never feed them, no matter how chill or curious they seem. Be bear aware. Stay alert, carry bear spray, and know how to use it.
Be Considerate of Others:
Share the trail, give space, keep the volume down, and be mindful of how your experience impacts others on the trail. A little courtesy helps everyone enjoy the wild the way it’s meant to be.
