Whether you're looking for a quick escape to the mountains with friends or a romantic trip for two, visiting Big Sky in the Fall is a beautiful time of year. We've curated some of the best options so you can mix-and-match the perfect itinerary to meet your needs.
Why Fall?
Fall in Big Sky is short and sweet but offers many advantages. As it's often referred to as, "off-season," it's a smart time to visit to avoid crowds. It's also a great time to visit if you're looking to take advantage of off-season discounts and deals.
Keep In Mind
Many local residents love this quiet season, but it's important for visitors to keep a few things in mind:
- Services will be limited. Due to the lull in visitation, many businesses including restaurants, shops, and public bus schedules will change and limit their hours of operations.
- Less options for activities. While hiking and biking are still wonderful options this time of year, other activities such as those at Big Sky Resort will be closed for the seasoned.
- Unpredictable Weather. Weather in the mountains can change quickly this time of year. We can have gorgeous bluebird days followed by freezing temperatures at night. Pack for a variety of weather conditions.
Optimal Hiking Season:
Fall is an incredible time to hit the trails in and around Big Sky. You'll find peaceful solitude while crowds are low and be accompanied by perfect fall temperatures. As always, be bear aware on trails and carry bear spray. Discover our local trail system through the Big Sky Community Organization with options close to town, or explore trails further into the surrounding National Forest and in the nearby Yellowstone National Park boundary. Maps and guide books can be purchased at local outdoor retailers. Also, explore our blog: Top Hikes for Fall.
Explore trails on Two Wheels:
While lift-accessed mountain biking at Big Sky Resort is closed for the season, there are still plenty of cross-country style trails to explore and 'earn your turns.' Some of the more popular options this time of year include the Uplands/Hummocks loop, Mud Creek, and Mountain to Meadow. For more information check out our blog: Mountain biking in Big Sky and the Big Sky Community Organization website.
Discover Big Sky on Horseback:
There is nothing quite as beautiful as taking in the fall colors and landscapes on horseback. This is a fantastic option for solo and group travelers, and those with families. Contact our expert local outfitters to book your guided trail ride.
Go Off-Road:
A side-by-side excursion is another fun way to get off the beaten path and explore Big Sky's backcountry. Enjoy an off-road experience that leads to scenic vistas and hidden gems.
Cast A Line:
A day on the river is better than any day at the office. Discover the beauty of the Gallatin River on a guided fishing trip. Our local outfitters are experts with both experienced and novice fishermen and women.
Explore Yellowstone National Park:
If you're exploring Big Sky in the Fall, you should also take a day to explore Yellowstone National Park. The west entrance is only an hour away from Big Sky, making it extremely easy to access on your own. However, if you prefer a more in-depth experience consider hiring a local YNP tour guide.
Many restaurants limit their hours during this time of year. While we do our best to provide up-to-date information, businesses do change operating hours quite frequently. We encourage visitors to call ahead to ensure restaurants are open.
Quick Bites:
Check out Cowboy Coffee Co. and Caliber Coffee Roasters for grab-and-go morning options before heading out on your adventure. At mid-day, grab a burrito made to order at the Wrap Shack, or snag a pre-made sandwich from the Hungry Moose and Deli to take on the trail with you.
