Big Sky is a winter wonderland, offering adventures the whole family will love. While skiing or snowboarding at Big Sky Resort is the main attraction, there are plenty of other snowy side quests to explore in town and beyond. We've curated a list of options so you can craft the perfect winter…
Getting Here:
The Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport, Montana’s busiest airport, is now more accessible than ever with nonstop flights from 19 cities and 20 airports.
Once you land in Bozeman, a scenic one-hour drive through breathtaking landscapes will take you to Big Sky. Families can choose from various transportation options, including private shuttles, or reserve seats on the daily Karst Stage Coach airport transfer. For ultimate flexibility, renting a car at the airport is recommended.
Big Sky offers a wide range of lodging options, from convenient ski-in/ski-out cabins on the mountain to more secluded retreats in the canyon. Here are some of our family-friendly recommendations:
Big Sky Resort: If your family wants to maximize your time on the mountain, booking at Big Sky Resort is a no-brainer. With a range of options from hotels to condos, you’ll find the perfect fit for your family. Budget Tip: Book in advance and consider visiting during slower periods like early December or April to take advantage of great deals on lodging at Big Sky Resort.
Lone Mountain Ranch: This hidden gem in Big Sky offers a secluded retreat while still being close to the action. Lone Mountain Ranch provides a complete experience that the whole family will enjoy. While you’re just minutes away from skiing at Big Sky Resort, you can also take advantage of the ranch’s amenities, including sleigh ride dinners and cross-country skiing.
320 Guest Ranch: If your family is seeking an authentic Western experience with a cozy touch, booking a cabin at 320 Guest Ranch is the perfect choice. While it’s a bit further down the canyon (about a 30-minute drive to Big Sky Resort), the ranch’s stunning beauty and prime location for winter activities like snowmobiling and fly-fishing make it a great option for families. You can even book a sleigh ride during your stay.
The Wilson Hotel: Located in the heart of Big Sky’s town center, the Wilson Hotel is a great option for those seeking easy access to dining and shopping. After a day on the slopes, your family can relax in the outdoor hot tub or explore the quaint shops of Big Sky.
Other Mentions:
- The Lodge at Big Sky: Another great option for slopeside accommodations.
- Vacation Rentals: Consider a vacation rental for families seeking a full kitchen and full home amenities.
- Montage Big Sky: For ultimate luxury and high-end amenities.
Snow Sports:
Hitting the slopes at Big Sky Resort is one of the many highlights of a family winter vacation in Big Sky. Consider booking lessons during your stay to ensure your beginners get expert guidance. Don't forget to schedule in those hot chocolate breaks and pocket snacks for a fun-filled day on the slopes. See our: Tips To Teach Your Kids To Ski.
Winter Adventures:
Make sure to add some off-mountain winter adventures including snowmobiling and dog-sledding. Yellowstone National Park is beautiful in the winter, and snowcoach tours are a great way for families to stay warm and cozy while exploring the Park in its frozen glory.
Evening Fun:
Renting skates at East Slope Outdoors and enjoying a family ice skating session at the Marty Pavelich Ice Rink, located in Big Sky's town center, is a beautiful way to spend a wintery evening.
On the mountain, reserve your tickets to explore the Enchanted Forest, located on top of Andesite Mountain. Families will enjoy the heated ride up Ramcharger 8 chairlift to a magical display of over 10,000 lights.
Indoor Fun:
For those days when you just need to be inside, head to the BASE Community Center for rock climbing or grab a lane at the bowling alley located at the Montage.
Day Trips:
Looking for a little adventure beyond Big Sky's borders? Head to West Yellowstone to visit the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center or venture into Bozeman for a day at the Museum of the Rockies and a soak at the Bozeman Hot Springs.
Dining Experiences:
Experience the magic of winter as you glide along in a horse-drawn sleigh—one of Big Sky's most popular winter dining adventures. Local outfitters offer a range of dining experiences, from full prime rib dinners to hearty appetizers, making each ride a unique treat. This is truly an experience you won’t want to miss, so we strongly recommend booking in advance.
The Montana Dinner Yurt offers another unforgettable experience. Families are transported up the mountain in vintage snow cats to a secluded yurt where a warm fire and delicious meal await. The cozy ambiance, complete with live music and downhill sledding, creates a memorable evening your family will love. Be sure to reserve early, as this experience fills up quickly.
On The Mountain:
Families have several convenient dining options on the mountain during a ski day. Vista Hall in Mountain Village is a great choice, offering a variety of cuisines—from pizza and burgers to poke bowls. For a quick, easy, and family-friendly bite, the legendary hot dogs at Yeti Dogs are a favorite and make it easy to refuel and get back out on the trails.
If you’re on the North Side of Big Sky Resort, Headwaters Grille is a great stop for lunch and a bathroom break, offering quick grill fare and grab-and-go items. Uncle Dan's Cookie Hut is another popular spot on the North Side, serving up warm hot chocolate, paninis, and Uncle Dan's famous cookies.
Big Appetites:
Big days of adventure need hearty meals to refuel. The Riverhouse BBQ serves up generous plates of Texas-style barbecue that are sure to please a hungry crew. If burgers and shakes are what you’re craving, check out Blindside Burger in the town center, where you’ll find massive smash burgers and impressive milkshake creations.
Take-Out Night:
Spend a cozy night in with the family and order takeout. If everyone’s craving pizza, don’t miss ordering from Blue Moon Bakery or Pinky G's. For something with a little more spice, try Thai Basil or Big Sky Noodles.
Sweet Treat:
Be sure to save room for something sweet! Don’t miss Big Sky Scoops, located in the plaza by the Wilson Hotel. They offer locally made ice cream, candy, and other delightful confections.
