The mountains are calling. Time to close that laptop, pack your bags and head to Montana! Your winter escape to Big Sky doesn’t have to be a long one. Our guide is here to help you plan for your weekend getaway.

If you only have the weekend in Big Sky, it’s important to make the most of your time. Staying slopeside means you spend more time on the mountain. Opt for staying at The Summit Hotel at Big Sky Resort, or splurge on a stay at the Montage or the One&Only. If you are traveling with a group, consider renting a ski-in and ski-out vacation rental.

If skiing isn’t your primary goal for the weekend, branch out and book accommodations in the Meadow. The Wilson Hotel,  Lone Mountain Ranch, and Gravity Haus are excellent choices right in the heart of it all with easy access to Big Sky Resort and local trails, dining, and shopping.

Fuel up for a busy weekend by starting your day with a classic grab-n-go, coffee, and a burrito. In the meadow, order at Cowboy Coffee Co. or Caliber Coffee Roasters before heading up the mountain. If you’re staying slopeside, you can grab breakfast at the Vista Hall or at Treeline Coffee at Big Sky Resort.

For lunch, snag a world-famous hot dog at Yeti Dogs or ski over to Shedhorn Grill for a beer and burger. If you’re in the meadow, enjoy lunch at By Word of Mouth or The Rocks Tasting Room (along with a flight of locally distilled Montana Whiskeys).

For an easy dinner, grab pizza at Milkies Pizza & Pub, Blue Moon Bakery or Pinky G’s. For upscale options, treat yourself to dinner at the Cabin Bar & Grill, Horn & Cantle, Michaelangelo’s, Wildwood, or Blue Buddha Sushi.

For at least one night during your weekend, book a unique dinner experience that's more than a meal. Reserve a spot on a sleigh-ride dinner or at the Montana Dinner Yurt for an incredible adventure in the mountains.

Of course, skiing and snowboarding at Big Sky Resort are the main events during the winter in Big Sky. But there is a lot more to see and do beyond the slopes.

Brand new for 2026, the Kircliff is a breathtaking two-story glass sanctuary perched at the very summit of Lone Mountain. Step inside for an experience that feels less like a building and more like floating above the mountain. Whether you’re clicking out of your skis or arriving via scenic pass, you’ll be treated to unmatched 360-degree panoramas that stretch for miles. It’s the ultimate "top of the world" moment.

Include a hike to Ousel Falls. This trail is 1.6 miles round-trip, making it a quick and easy addition to any day. The waterfall creates a beautiful frozen landscape that is worth the quick jaunt.  Make sure to dress in layers and bring sturdy footwear, as the trail can be icy.

Go ice skating on the Marty Pavelich ice rink, located in Big Sky’s town center.  Book a GPS-guided snowmobiling adventure, or hit the cross-country ski trails.

A winter weekend is the prime time to experience Big Sky’s legendary après-ski scene, which reaches a fever pitch on Saturdays and Sundays. Hit up Everett's 8800 in the afternoon before heading to the Mountain Village Plaza or head down the mountain on Saturdays to the Last Best Après at Lone Mountain Ranch.

If you have time, book an oversnow tour to visit Yellowstone National Park. Winter is an underrated season to visit the Park. But with fewer visitors and more wildlife sightings, it's a great time to go.  Keep in mind that the winter season for oversnow tours ends March 15.
